Mental Model Tools · Pillar 2
Tinnitus feels loudest when your attention keeps snapping back to it. These short listening exercises train the skills it pulls on: picking out a sound, telling where it is, switching between sounds on purpose, and letting a sound sit at the edge of awareness.
One session a day, about 15 minutes. Headphones help a lot.
Session length
Each exercise gets harder as you improve, and eases off if a round goes badly.
Practice one exercise on its own:
Tinnitus tends to grab attention, and attention tends to make it louder and harder to ignore. A handful of small studies have tried training attention directly:
The studies were small, and broader brain-training and pitch-training programs did no better than their comparison groups. The common thread in the positive results is active listening that asks for a response, done daily for three to four weeks. That is what this program does. Treat it as practice for a skill, not a cure, and use it alongside your audiologist’s care.
More practice: the Music Gym trains holding one instrument in a full band, and the Sensory Method is an 8-minute daily letting-go practice.

Before you start
You’ll answer these again halfway through and at the end, so you can see honestly whether anything changed.
Over the past week, how much did your tinnitus intrude on your life?
When you want to, how easily can you put your tinnitus out of mind?
Set up
Two of the exercises use left and right, so headphones make a real difference. Play each side, then set your volume so the sounds are soft but clear.

Where did the sound come from?

Listen…
Follow the highlighted sound. Tap when it plays an odd note.
When the highlight moves, move your attention with it. Ignore odd notes in the other sound.
Close your eyes and settle in.

This is a listening practice, not a medical treatment, and results vary. Please see an audiologist or physician about your own tinnitus, especially if it is new, one-sided or pulsing.
