How to find your tinnitus frequency, step by step

Matching your own pitch takes a minute of quiet attention. Here’s the reliable way to do it:

  1. Sit somewhere quiet and, if you can, use headphones — they make the comparison much easier.
  2. Set the volume low, then press Play tone. You’ll hear a steady sound.
  3. Drag the pitch slider slowly up and down. You’re listening for the spot where the tone sits right on top of your tinnitus — where the two seem to blend into one.
  4. When you’re close, use the – finer and + finer buttons to zero in.
  5. Press Save my pitch to keep the number. That value in Hz is your best estimate of your tinnitus frequency.

A common trap: your tinnitus and the tone can sound matched but sit exactly one octave apart (for example 3,000 Hz vs 6,000 Hz). If two very different slider positions both feel “close,” try the higher one as well and see which blends more completely.

What frequency is tinnitus usually?

For most people, tinnitus is high-pitched — it commonly lands somewhere between about 3,000 and 8,000 Hz, often near the range where their hearing has dipped. But it genuinely varies from person to person: some hear a low hum, others a very high whistle above 8,000 Hz. There is no “normal” number, only your number. Whatever you land on is simply useful information about your own tinnitus, not a diagnosis.

How accurate is a self-test like this?

Honestly? It’s a good estimate, not a precise measurement. Matching your own pitch by ear is approximate — the octave confusion above is real, the result can drift a little from day to day, and a phone speaker will do worse than headphones. That’s fine for getting oriented and for gentle self-help.
